Helping dear ones with depression

Tackling depression is not an easy task especially when it is threatening a family member or a dear one. Depression is a tough call to deal with when a person isn’t aware of the fact that he/she is really in need of help, thus the best you can do for them is to offer professional support, to end their suffering and agony. Those who are going through depression usually are not able to show their feelings which can result in loss of esteem, sleeping disorder, loss of appetite, failure and shame.

Before you start helping your dear ones in dealing with their depression, you should be aware of the signs and symptoms that lead to the depression. Depression affects different people differently, thus if you suspect your loved one is in a depression you can consult your physician, psychologist or psychiatrist for the symptoms and ways to help.

The best approach would be to take your dear one to a professional for a treatment or help. Some of the things that you can do to help a dear one during the treatment are:

* Try and comprehend the situation.

* Don’t leave them; in fact give them a company even if it means adjusting little bit with your schedule

* Try to give confidence to them.

* Try to listen whatever they want to say and talk to them, make sure you are not sarcastic or show any disappointment over there condition.

* Don’t laugh at what they want to express.

* Encourage them that the disease from which they are suffering do have a cure.

* It is understandable that the person might avoid the treatment, but try to understand and avoid any argument with person, who is suffering. Make them believe that you are there to help.

* Fix an appointment with the physician and if possible also accompany them to visit the physician.

* Try and let the person know the importance of the medication and support the person to continue with the treatment.

* Invite the depressed person to social gatherings, movies and invite for walks

* Try to involve your dear one in the activities that he/she used to enjoy the most. If your invitation gets rejected then gently try to accept it. Don’t try to force the person to accept as it will not do any good.
Persons going through depression should be encouraged to gain a positive outlook towards life, which will in them attain a good health.
