Maintaining a good posture in children
According to Mr. Jeffrey, Dean of Clinics at National University of Health Sciences, Lombard, having a good posture is very important. There have been various cases where children have complained pains in shoulder, neck and hands along with recurring motion injuries like ‘carpal tunnel syndrome’. Maintaining a good posture and right use of the backpack can really help in prevention of these complaints in children.
If proper attention is not given, it can also lead to the irregular growth of the bones in the body. When your child maintains a good posture while sitting, it puts less strain on his ligaments and muscles. Experts often stress on good posture as helps in preventing back pain, tiredness, reduce the wear on the joints, bones and helps in having a good appearance.
Knowing more about good posture-
Maintaining a good posture is about how your children position their body when they are standing, sitting, or while laying down. Good posture maintains flexibility in the muscles, normal movement in the joints as well as keeps a balance in the muscles with the spine. You really have to be very particular about your child’s posture thus it’s your responsibility to correct them, whenever they are sitting in a wrong posture. Other when a child maintains a good posture he enjoys self-confidence, develops a good walking posture as well as keep his head high.
Complications caused by bad posture-
If your child is not wearing proper backpacks it will cause various back complications. If your child is watching television, playing video games and sitting on computer for long hours then your child can experience bad posture, which could cause various back or joints related problems at later stage.
Making adequate use of backpack-
As parents you should be aware that the backpack does weigh more than ten percent of your child’s body weight. The position of backpack is important, as it should not be hanging more than 4 inches under the waistline of your child, just in case it is then you must tighten the strap as it becomes lighter. Make sure that your child makes use of both of the straps.
If your child is fond of using computers and if your child slouches then provide him with a comfortable chair of right size, it could help in correcting your child’s posture. A good posture means less space between the feet and the floor. If the chair is not comfortable for your child then put a pillow to provide extra support. According to Dr. Kristine the child should not sit for over twenty minutes in front of the television or for playing video games, thus make sure that your child takes regular breaks in between.
Become a good example for your children and display right postures and right way to sit. Let your children know about the benefits of right body posture and the possible harm they could attain if they ignore the need of correct postures.
